Any comments on the effectiveness of religion as a driving force for the advancement of Culture/Civilisation

What is the greatest feat religion has achieved in terms of encouraging humans to do something good?
alternatively what is the greatest hinderance religion has had on humanity as a whole?

In my opinion religion could be the single greatest driving force for our entire divine race, however, not any of the religions as known to the world to date. There is no religion that currently graces this world with a strong vision nor purpose, the history of the world has allowed these, once noble, ideas to be corrupted and distorted into contradictory tools for discrimination, hatred and elitism rather than unification, redirection and reformation. so in answer to your question I believe that, yes, religion is the single greatest driving force for mankind but it will be quite some time before the masses even know of a true faith let alone believe in it.
